INSPIRE 3EL3 C03 - Narratives of War
Offering: Intersession 2025
What does war do to a person? How do these experiences inform cultural and historical memory?
This course will explore complex interstices of memory, language, trauma, storytelling, and resilience through critical engagement with the lived experiences of persons affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. These narrative testimonies were gathered through the SSHRC/NFRF “Narratives of War” project led by scholars in Canada and Ukraine.?
Working with an interdisciplinary teaching team drawn from the fields of linguistics, history, psychology, and archival science, we will consider how the concept of “narrative” is shaped by history, politics, linguistics, psychology, and documentary memory? Students will divide their time between engagement with scholarly perspectives and primary documents; interactive discussions with experts; and experiential learning in the Omeka S digital exhibit platform.
