We are living in a time when ecological degradation and disconnection from nature is increasingly impacting the wellbeing of young people, often referred to as the “Climate Generation”. In response, this course facilitates learning experiences that foster students’ emotional awareness and connection with other species, lands, and waters in the local environment. Through readings, videos, discussions, and collaborative activities, the course integrates key concepts from across the environmental sciences and humanities, education, and Indigenous studies. Students regularly participate in immersive outdoor learning opportunities focused on sensory experiences (e.g., listening, feeling), with attention to changes in the environment over time. The culminating project invites learners to create an arts-based expression (e.g., creative writing, painting) for public display, which aims to cultivate ecological empathy and care while inspiring hope for the future.
